Hi! I’m Kaitlynn, and welcome to Sunny Spur!
Here is a little glimpse into how I got where I am today!
I have always loved animals. I love their life stories and the love they show, but most of all, I love their silly but unique characters. Personally, animals make my hard life, a little easier.
In December of 2021, I got a concussion. This concussion has caused many issues, most of which have been life-changing. However, if it had not happened, I doubt I would be where I am today.
Before my concussion I was extremely active and athletic. I did Soccer in the fall then Track in the spring. Freshman year, I was playing varsity on both teams. Then it all changed.
During winter break of my sophomore year of high school, I slipped on ice while escaping from a cougar and her two cubs. They were less than twenty yards away. The concussion introduced many conditions into my life: chronic migraines, memory loss, anxiety, PTSD, depression, ADHD, comprehension problems, concentration issues, and more. I felt like I had nothing left. No more sports, no more running, no more being active or loud environments. All of which worsen my migraines.
However, the summer of 2022, I decided to start training puppies. I finally found what I was called to do with my life. I wanted to become a professional Service dog and Emotional Support dog trainer.
But, unlike the usual dog trainers, my mom and I came up with a way I could become a dog trainer all while accommodating my new physical limitations due to the concussion, thus establishing Sunny Spur.
Now, many years later, I still have chronic migraines, and all those issues stated above. But that does not stop me from helping people feel needed and loved by their new dog.
Believe it or not I began my business in 2020, when I was 14-years-old! Yes, you read that correctly, I was 14-years-old.
I knew I wanted to be a dog trainer and live on a ranch since I was a little girl. The problem was, I didn’t know what my business would look like or how it would function. In 2020, during COVID-19, I got my first dog, Lady. Lady is the reason I found my passion, dog training.
Late one night in 2020, my mom and I began day dreaming about my business. We kept asking ourselves, is there a way I can train dogs while still being in high school and living at home? We came up with an answer, what if I had a business where I train a puppy at our house then sell it? We had an idea, I sell my pups crate-trained and potty-trained, along with the basic commands, and possibly some Emotional Support training and Service dog training. This allows the transition into a new home to be less stressful and more enjoyable for both parties. Who wants to stay up in the middle of the night to let your pup outside? You also don’t have to worry about teaching your puppy the basics: what is okay and what isn't, such as, chewing on furniture.
After Lady was fully trained, roughly 6 months after I got her, I began my hunt for a puppy. By the end of the year, I had trained two puppies, and the following year, another two.
I began training dogs for a dog breeder, along with random dogs along the way. This taught me a lot about my personal abilities and natural talents such as being very good at picking out a well-tempered puppy.
Well…Sunny Spur is exactly that! I train the puppies at my home until they meet my training criteria, this can be anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months.
Sunny Spur is welcoming and understanding. We all have struggles, my dogs can assist. Everyone deserves a chance to be happy and I believe my dogs can help you find happiness.
